There was a season in my life when everything looked fine on the outside… but inside, I felt overwhelmed.
Anxiety has a way of showing up quietly — racing thoughts before bed, a tight chest for no reason, feeling behind even when you’re doing your best.
Depression can feel even heavier — like moving through the day with a weight you can’t explain.
If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone.
I’ve learned that mental wellness isn’t about pretending everything is perfect. It’s about creating small rituals that help you breathe again.
For me, aromatherapy became one of those rituals.
What Anxiety and Depression Can Feel Like
Anxiety often shows up as:
Restlessness
Racing thoughts
Trouble sleeping
Physical tension
Depression can look like:
Low energy
Lack of motivation
Feeling disconnected
Difficulty finding joy in things you once loved
And sometimes? They overlap.
While aromatherapy is not a replacement for therapy, medical care, or professional treatment, it can be a supportive tool in your wellness routine.
And that’s where scent comes in.
How Aromatherapy Supports Emotional Wellness
Our sense of smell is directly connected to the limbic system — the part of the brain that regulates emotion and memory.
That’s why one scent can instantly transport you back to childhood… or make you feel calm within seconds.
Certain fragrance notes are known for their calming properties:
Lavender – Promotes relaxation and better sleep
Eucalyptus – Clears mental fog and encourages deep breathing
Mint – Invigorates and refreshes
Vanilla – Comforting and grounding
Citrus – Uplifting and mood-boosting
When you light a candle or diffuse a scent intentionally, you’re not just making your space smell good — you’re creating a signal to your nervous system that it’s safe to soften.
How Aromatherapy Helped Me
There were mornings I didn’t feel motivated. Nights when my mind wouldn’t slow down. Days when running a business, being a wife, being a mom — all of it felt like a lot.
I started creating small moments for myself.
I would light a candle before journaling.
Spray my room before bed.
Take three deep breaths while focusing on the scent.
It seems simple — but that pause mattered.
The ritual became grounding. The scent became familiar. My body began to associate certain fragrances with peace.
Over time, I realized something beautiful:
I wasn’t just making candles.
I was creating anchors.
Anchors for calm.
Anchors for clarity.
Anchors for softness.
If you’re navigating anxiety or depression, here are a few gentle ways to incorporate aromatherapy into your routine:
Morning Reset – Light a mint or citrus candle while getting ready to boost energy.
Midday Pause – Take 5 slow breaths with eucalyptus or rosemary nearby.
Evening Wind Down – Use lavender or vanilla scents before bed.
Journaling Ritual – Pair one specific scent with reflection time so your brain associates it with emotional release.
Consistency builds connection.
Connection builds calm.
A Gentle Reminder
Aromatherapy is a supportive practice — not a cure. If you are struggling deeply, please seek support from a licensed professional or someone you trust. There is strength in asking for help.
But in the meantime, don’t underestimate the power of small rituals.
Sometimes healing begins with something as simple as lighting a candle and allowing yourself to breathe.
And if you needed permission today — this is it.
You deserve softness.
You deserve peace.
You deserve something thoughtful.
